Teeth Whitening - Washington D.C.

There are many ways to brighten your teeth. Whitening systems can range anywhere from toothpaste to trays to dentist office visits.

Teeth Whitening Toothpastes

All toothpastes contain mild abrasives that help in removing surface stains. Some toothpastes remove the surface stains without any bleach in them. The common teeth whitening toothpastes found at supermarkets and drug stores have in them carbamine peroxide and hydrogen peroxide which can lighten the color deep within the tooth. Whitening toothpastes can lighten teeth color by one shade. However, light-activated teeth whitening at the dentist office can actually lighten your teeth three to eight shades lighter.

Teeth Whitening Strips and Gels

Gels contain peroxide and they are to be applied directly to your teeth. Most require application two times a day for two weeks or 14 days. Results usually can be noted within a few days with sustained results lasting for about three months.

Teeth Whitening Rinses

Whitening rinses basically do everything regular rinses do, such as reducing plague and fighting gum disease, but they also contain hydrogen peroxide and other ingredients to whiten your teeth. It can take up to 12 weeks to see results. Unlike other methods such as strips that are to be applied for 30 minutes at a time, teeth whitening rinses only remain in your mouth for about 60 seconds.

Teeth Whitening Trays

Teeth whitening trays, also called tray-based tooth whitening systems are filled with gel that contains a peroxide agent that bleaches the teeth. Typical use requires the tray to be used 2 hours a day for as long as four weeks or longer. Whitening trays can be purchased either at the store or at your dentist office.

Teeth Whitening In-Office

The quickest, most effective white to brighten your teeth is with a visit to the dentist. The dentist can provide in-office bleaching which is applied directly to the teeth. The treatments may also combine the use of light, laser or heat to brighten your teeth. Results can be seen within 30 to 60 minutes. For even brighter teeth several appointments may be needed.
